The best news about Halloween makeup in 2026 is that the gore is receding. The looks getting attention this year are polished rather than gruesome: dark, editorial, metallic, strange around the edges. Trend reporting this season describes a clear move away from gore-heavy faces toward what is being called gothic glam, which is a long way of saying a beautiful face with something wrong with it.
That is excellent news if you are over 35, because the gothic glam family of looks flatters grown-up faces in a way that latex wounds never will. Below are six looks, in order of difficulty, each with the products required, the method, who it suits, and how to get it off without losing your skin barrier.
Before You Start: Four Rules
Prime more than you think. Every look here involves either dark pigment or metallic shimmer, both of which travel. A primer plus a light setting powder in the creases around the eyes and the nasolabial folds is the difference between looking sharp at eleven and looking melted.
Dark eyes want soft edges on mature skin. A hard black line in the socket crease reads as heavy and ages the eye. The same black, blended out with a clean fluffy brush, reads as smoky and expensive. Blend for twice as long as you think necessary.
Skip the white cream base. Full-face white greasepaint settles into every line you have within the hour. If you need pallor, use a foundation two shades lighter than yours plus a pale translucent powder, and keep your actual foundation on the neck so there is no mask line.
Buy one new thing, not ten. Every look below needs a single specialist product at most. The rest comes out of a normal makeup bag, and most of it overlaps with the fall 2026 makeup trends you may already be wearing.
1. Gothic Glam
The look of the season and the most wearable on this list. Luminous pale skin, smoked-out dark eyes, deep wine lips. It is a costume and it is also just a dramatic evening face, which means you can wear it to a party where half the guests did not dress up.
You need: a foundation one to two shades lighter than yours, a charcoal or deep plum eyeshadow, black eyeliner, a deep wine or oxblood lipstick, highlighter.
Method: Foundation first, lighter than normal, blended down the neck. Charcoal shadow through the socket and smudged along the lower lash line, then blended outward and upward with a clean brush until there is no visible edge. Black liner tight into the upper lash base only. Skip blush entirely, which is what makes it read as undead rather than pretty. Highlighter high on the cheekbone and down the nose bridge. Then the lip, applied with a brush, blotted once, reapplied.
Suits: everyone. Deep wine is one of the few lip colors that works across every skin tone, which the skin tone makeup guide gets into properly.
Costume it completes: vampire, widow, Morticia, any witch.
2. Ghost Lashes
The viral one. White mascara and bleached-looking brows against pale skin, which produces a Victorian-spirit effect that photographs extremely well and takes about eight minutes.
You need: white mascara, a pale concealer or brow soap, a grey or taupe shadow, a nude or pale pink lip.
Method: Comb concealer through the brows to knock the color out, then set with a brow gel so the hairs stay flat. Grey shadow lightly in the crease and under the lower lashes, blended soft, to hollow the eye. White mascara on top and bottom lashes, two coats, separating with a spoolie between them. Pale lip. No liner anywhere.
Suits: anyone comfortable losing their brows for an evening. Removing brow definition changes your face more than any other single move, which is exactly why it works.
Costume it completes: ghost, spirit, ice queen, anything pale.
3. Chrome and Molten Metal
Silver chrome lids and metallic pigment, which several trend reports name as one of the defining 2026 directions. It is the easiest look here to execute badly and the most striking when it works.
You need: a silver or gunmetal chrome eyeshadow, ideally a cream or pressed foil formula rather than a loose pigment, an eyeshadow primer, black liner.
Method: Primer on the lid, then press the chrome on with a flat brush or your fingertip. Pressing, not sweeping, is the entire technique: chrome applied with a sweeping motion goes patchy. Keep it on the mobile lid only, with a hard stop, and leave the crease bare. Black liner under the lower lash line, smudged. Nude lip, bare cheeks.
Suits: hooded eyes less well, since chrome on a hooded lid disappears when the eye is open. If your lids are hooded, put the chrome in the inner corner and along the lower lash line instead and keep the lid matte.
Costume it completes: robot, android, futuristic anything, the K-pop stage look.
4. Pretty Clown
The clown is softer this year: a flawless base, geometric black shapes around the eye, metallic shimmer, and an overdrawn red lip in a deliberate smile shape. Given that Pennywise is the single most-searched costume of 2026, there will be clowns at your party. This is the version that does not require a bald cap.
You need: black liquid liner with a fine tip, a red lipstick, a red or rose cream blush, rose gold shimmer, white eyeliner.
Method: Perfect, matte base. Then draw two shapes in black liquid liner: a small triangle or diamond above the brow at the arch, and another below the eye on the cheek, both slightly elongated. Rose gold shimmer on the lid. Circles of cream blush high on the apple of each cheek, blended just at the edges. Overdraw the lip upward at the corners with red, following a smile curve rather than your natural line. White liner in the waterline to open the eye.
Suits: anyone who wants the biggest visual payoff for the least money, since this is all standard products.
Costume it completes: clown, harlequin, doll, circus performer.
5. Mannequin Skin
The M3GAN-adjacent look, built on high-coverage foundation and oversized lashes, so your face reads as moulded plastic. It is the most unsettling look here and it requires the least precision.
You need: a full-coverage foundation, a translucent powder, oversized false lashes, a pale matte lip, a soft brown contour.
Method: Foundation everywhere, including the lips and the brows, applied with a sponge until your natural features flatten. Powder heavily so there is no light reflection at all, which is the opposite of everything you normally do. Draw the brows back on in a slightly unnatural arch. Big lashes, upper only. Blush in a flat, even wash, not a natural placement. A pale lip drawn slightly smaller than your real mouth.
Suits: anyone. Flattening is the point, so there is no shape it does not work on.
Costume it completes: doll, android, mannequin, uncanny anything.
6. UV Reactive
Blacklight parties pushed demand for UV-reactive paint and neon pigments this year. Only worth doing if you know for a fact the party has a blacklight, because under normal light it reads as face paint and nothing more.
You need: UV-reactive face paint or neon pigment, a setting spray.
Method: Keep the design graphic and simple: lines along the cheekbones, down the nose bridge, radiating from the outer eye. Fine detail is wasted under a blacklight. Set it hard.
Suits: parties with a dance floor and no good lighting, which is most of them.
Taking It Off Without Wrecking Your Skin
This is where most Halloween nights go wrong. Heavy pigment plus scrubbing equals a week of irritation.
Start with an oil or a balm cleanser, worked onto dry skin with dry hands for a full minute before any water touches it. Oil dissolves pigment, water sets it. For the eyes, press a cotton pad soaked in micellar water against the closed lid and hold it for ten seconds before wiping, then wipe downward and outward once. Do not rub back and forth. Follow with your normal cleanser, then a plain moisturizer, and skip retinol and acids that night entirely.
Glitter and loose pigment come off best with micellar water on a cotton pad used in a single sweeping direction, then whatever strays onto the cheek lifted with the sticky side of a piece of tape. It sounds ridiculous and it works.
Picking the Right One
If you want to look beautiful and slightly wrong, choose gothic glam. If you want the most reaction for the least work, choose ghost lashes. If you have a specific costume already planned, choose the look listed under it.
And if your wider Halloween plan is still vague, start at this year's costume trends or go straight to twelve costumes built from your own closet. If you are skipping the costume altogether, gothic glam plus a dark party outfit is the entire answer. For a face that works on an ordinary evening rather than on October 31, our ten-minute routine is the place to go instead.
